US-Oman pact clears Senate

The U.S. Senate approved a free trade pact with Oman on Thursday, overcoming Democrats' complaints that the Gulf Arab state has not done enough to improve workers rights.

Senators voted 60-34 in favor of the pact, which would boost U.S. economic ties with the Arab monarchy of about 3 million people that is a non-OPEC oil and natural-gas producer.

A key committee in the U.S. House of Representatives also voted 23-15 to approve the pact, with the panel's Democrats opposed. The party line vote sets the stage for a potentially tough battle in the full House next month.

Oman is next door to both Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates, whose state-owned port company had to abandon plans to buy terminal operation rights at major U.S. ports earlier this year when that ignited a political firestorm.

Alliance for a Healthy Tomorrow

Recently members of USW Local 1357 Safety Committee attended a 2 day safety conference in Newton, MA. The Alliance for a Healthy Tomorrow is a group that unites environmentalists, labor unions and civic groups together to push for a safer workplace and a better community.

Around the United States, more than 1,500 paper mill workers represented by the USW are in a struggle at SAPPI, a global paper company based in South Africa

Good paying jobs with decent benefits are disappearing worldwide. In this global economy multinational corporations are  playing workers against each other in a race to the bottom.

SAPPI is no different. They are raising healthcare costs, breaking promises to retirees, contracting out jobs, and introducing a two-tier benefits program.

THEY HAVE NOT HAD A CONTRACT IN 3 YEARS

CALL THEIR BOSTON OFFICE AT 617-423-7300

LET THEM KNOW THIS IS OUTRAGOUS

Pasco Dyani, CEPPWAWU National President, traveled from Johannesburg , South Africa to help his American brothers and sisters in Maine get a fair contract. This is a great example of how a multinational uses America's weak labor laws to exploit American workers. Like a shark that smells blood in the water, SAPPI wants it's American workforce to get less than their South African counterparts.

American workers have fewer rights than they think. And without a union they have none!

USW RAMPS UP EMPLOYEE FREE CHOICE

Just days after the USW Executive Board approved a huge new mobilization effort to win more co-sponsors for the Employee Free Choice Act as its top legislative priority, the USW helped recruit three more members of the U.S. House of Representatives to co-sponsor the act, bringing total House support for H.R. 1696 to 210. The Senate version of the bill, S. 842, has 42 co-sponsors. Among other provisions, the act would strengthen protections for workers’ freedom to form unions by requiring employers to recognize a union after a majority of workers signs cards authorizing representation.

Using its Rapid Response network to mobilize on the grassroots level and reach out to lawmakers in their home districts by dedicating the union’s legislative staff to congressional action, the USW is aiming for a possible vote on the bill this year. For more information on the Employee Free Choice Act, see http://www.aflcio.org/joinaunion/voiceatwork/efca/.
